When Drawn Upright

Upright Meaning

Once you've made a clear choice in The Lovers, you have to live it out on the open road, and that's where The Chariot takes over. Notice that the two sphinxes in front of the cart are painted black and white, facing slightly apart. Left to themselves, they'd pull in opposite directions. Your mixed motives don't vanish just because you set a goal; you learn to harness both of them to pull the same axle.

When The Chariot appears upright, momentum is on your side if you stay focused. Don't wait for a mood where you feel zero fear or zero ambivalence. Put your armor on, pick your landmark on the horizon, and drive.

When Drawn Reversed

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, The Chariot looks like a vehicle with the wheels spinning in mud: lots of noise, smoke, and temper, very little forward ground covered. Maybe you're trying to force an outcome that isn't yours to control, or treating allies like obstacles because you're stressed.

Sometimes it flips the other way: sitting in the passenger seat of your own life and letting everyone else's emergencies dictate your route. Either way, pull over, check where you're trying to go, and stop driving angry.

Visual Reading

Symbolism & Visual Keys

Look closely at the charioteer's hands: he holds a short wand, not leather reins. Brute force won't keep those black and white sphinxes moving together; only steady intent does. On his shoulders sit two crescent moons, nodding to Cancer's lunar ruler, while the square on his chestplate marks the order of Earth holding Water steady.

Behind him stands the walled city he just left behind. Above his head hangs a blue canopy studded with eight-pointed stars, reminding him that even a conquering driver still travels under a much larger sky.

Practical Context

The Chariot in Real Life

In Love & Relationships

Stop letting old defenses or mood swings steer the conversation. You can protect your heart without turning every disagreement into a test of who wins.

At Work & Money

Lock onto the target and see it through. Competing demands will try to pull you sideways this week; keep both hands on the wheel until you cross the line.

As Advice

Align your gut and your head toward the same destination, then move with conviction.

Connections Across Systems

Astrology · Cancer

Ruled by Cancer, cardinal Water. Cancer builds a protective shell (the armor and the chariot box) so the soft, emotional core inside can move boldly through the world.

Numerology · 7 (directed motion, testing, and willpower under pressure)

Number 7 is the test of agency in action. Its higher octave is The Tower (16 -> 7), which shatters the armor when the charioteer forgets that control has limits.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Charioteer hold no reins?

The two sphinxes—one black, one white—can't be steered by brute leather straps. He guides them through mental focus and internal alignment rather than physical force.

How does Cancer relate to The Chariot?

Cancer is cardinal Water, initiating emotional force protected by a hard shell. The Chariot's armor and wheeled enclosure let deep feeling travel safely into public territory.

What does The Chariot reversed mean?

It means your two horses are bolting in opposite directions: either you're bulldozing ahead without checking where you're going, or you've stalled out in frustration.
