When Drawn Upright

Upright Meaning

Contrast the figure in Strength with The Chariot right before her: the armor is gone, the stone walls are gone, and there's no weapon in sight. She stands in an open green meadow in a plain white dress, calmly resting her hands on the jaws of a full-grown lion. That's the difference between white-knuckle willpower and inner authority.

When Strength turns up upright, you don't need to overpower anyone, including yourself. If you've been fighting your own anger, grief, or appetite like an enemy, stop wrestling it. Name what you're feeling without shame, give it a steady hand, and let that raw heat fuel your stamina instead of burning the house down.

When Drawn Reversed

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, Strength usually shows up when you're running on fumes and your patience is frayed. Little irritations provoke a roar, or you swing to the opposite extreme and swallow your fire completely until you feel small and defeated.

Don't judge yourself for being tired. Even the steadiest person loses their cool when they haven't rested. Step out of the ring, recover your footing, and remember what you've already survived.

Visual Reading

Symbolism & Visual Keys

Look at the lion's face and tail: its tongue is out, licking her hand, and its tail is tucked in calm trust rather than lashing. Around her waist and across the lion's neck winds a chain of living red roses—affection and patience holding what iron chains would only make ferocious.

Above her crown of flowers floats the same horizontal figure-eight of infinity we saw over The Magician, showing that gentle endurance taps an inexhaustible reserve when ego stops trying to put on a show.

Practical Context

Strength in Real Life

In Love & Relationships

Patience beats defensiveness right now. Meet heat with a steady voice and a warm hand rather than escalating to prove a point.

At Work & Money

Long-haul stamina wins this round. Anyone can sprint for two days in a panic; steady leadership is keeping your composure when the room gets tense.

As Advice

Don't try to crush your anger, fear, or appetite. Acknowledge the lion, breathe, and guide that energy somewhere useful.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Strength card 8 in some decks and 11 in others?

Modern Rider-Waite-Smith decks place Strength at 8 and Justice at 11 so Leo (Strength) sits between Cancer (The Chariot, 7) and Virgo (The Hermit, 9) along the zodiacal sequence.

What does the lion represent in the Strength card?

The lion is your raw animal vitality: anger, desire, pride, and survival instinct. Strength doesn't kill or cage the lion; she befriends and directs it.

What does Strength reversed mean?

It points either to lashing out when your pride gets nicked, or feeling worn thin and doubting whether you have the stamina to see a hard chapter through.
