Temperance: Meaning, Reversed, Love & Symbolism

When Drawn Upright

Upright Meaning

Coming right after the stripped-down finality of Death, Temperance feels like taking your first deep breath after a fever breaks. In metallurgy, you *temper* steel by heating it in fire and quenching it in cold water until the blade is neither brittle nor soft. That's what this card does with the competing parts of your life.

When Temperance turns up upright, quit the boom-and-bust approach. If you've been swinging between working sixteen-hour days and collapsing on the couch, or between saying nothing and blowing up, dial the mix back toward the center. You don't need a dramatic overhaul; you need the right ratio.

When Drawn Reversed

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, Temperance points to a recipe where the heat is turned up too high and the ingredients are separating. Maybe you're trying to rush a recovery period that simply takes time, or medicating stress with too much of a good thing.

Check where you're thinking in binary terms ("either I do this perfectly or I quit"). Pull back from the extremes and test a middle adjustment.

Visual Reading

Symbolism & Visual Keys

Look at how the winged figure pours water between the two golden cups: the stream flows at a diagonal, almost defying gravity, without spilling a drop. Neither cup is allowed to go stagnant; the liquid stays alive because it keeps moving between them.

One bare foot rests on dry river stones while the other dips into the pond. On the white robe sits a yellow triangle inside a square—spirit housed cleanly inside matter—while yellow irises bloom beside a long footpath winding toward a golden crown rising over distant peaks.

Practical Context

Temperance in Real Life

In Love & Relationships

Stop swinging between total fusion and cold distance. Good partnership is a daily mix of adjusting temperatures without losing yourself.

At Work & Money

Combine two skills or perspectives that usually sit in separate silos. Steady, measured iteration beats a frantic sprint right now.

As Advice

Look for the third option between two extremes. Adjust the ratios instead of throwing out the whole recipe.

Numerology · 14 / 5 (alchemy, moderation, and blending opposites into a living third thing)

Number 14 reduces to 5 (1+4=5), pairing with The Hierophant. What you learned as outer rules in Card 5 becomes intuitive, lived proportion in Card 14.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Temperance just mean boring moderation?

No. Notice the word comes from 'tempering' steel—heating iron in fire and plunging it into water so it becomes both strong and flexible.

Why does the angel have one foot in water and one on land?

It shows someone who can dip into deep emotion and intuition (water) while keeping one foot planted in practical reality (stone).

What does Temperance reversed mean?

It flags pendulum swings—binging and purging, overworking then crashing, or trying to force a rushed combination before the ingredients are ready.
